STAGE ISSS: Nancy Saccone

Join us for the June installment of the STAGE International Speaker Seminar Series (ISSS) with Dr. Nancy Lim Saccone, Department of Genetics, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

Talk Title: SNPs, Statistics, and Society: Lessons from Addiction Genetics Research

Abstract: The year 2020 has special significance. Nearly a decade ago in 2011, Eric Green and Mark Guyer of the U.S. National Human Genome Research Institute cited 2020 as a target milestone for human genomics research: beyond 2020, the goal was to have expanded from knowledge generation to greater emphasis on health applications that directly improve patient care. Important advances in our ability to generate and analyze data have brought us to this threshold of personalized, precision genomic medicine. I will discuss several studies in the addiction genetics field that exemplify effective strategies and tools that have brought us closer to this goal. These studies provide both results and resources that set the stage for the next decade of effort.

Biosketch: Dr. Saccone received her Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Brown University and completed postdoctoral training in Statistical Genetics at Washington University in St. Louis. She is currently an associate professor in the Department of Genetics at Washington University.  Her research focuses on using mathematical and statistical methods to understand human genetic variation and its contribution to complex diseases and traits. Research interests also include the genetics of substance use behaviors, psychiatric genetics, and extending genetic studies to understudied and minority populations.

CANSSI Ontario STAGE (STAGE) is a training program in genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics, housed at the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health, and funded by CANSSI Ontario at U of T, an extra-departmental unit in the Faculty of Arts and Science that is home to the Ontario Regional Centre of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute. Seminars are sponsored by The Hospital for Sick Children, the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital, the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, the McLaughlin Centre of the University of Toronto, the Fields Institute, and the Ontario Cancer Institute of the University Health Network.
