Registration Fee Support Program

To support the career development of PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows  CANSSI Ontario provides funds to help defray the cost of registration fees for conferences or workshops that support or enhance trainees’ scholarship in data science/statistics.

Awards are made on a first-come, first-served basis until program funds are depleted.

  1. PhD students or Postdoctoral Fellows with a demonstrated commitment to a career in data science at affiliated CANSSI Ontario partner universities or research institutes in Ontario.
  2. The trainee’s supervisor is a faculty member appointed to a statistics or biostatistics department or is a statistical scientist appointed to a mathematics department.
  3. Applicants must be presenting a paper/poster at a scholarly or professional conference. Attendance only cannot be funded.

Types of Activities

Data science/statistics-related events that promote interdisciplinary research or enable multidisciplinary collaborations.

Eligible Expenses

Event registration fees.

Ineligible Expenses

Cost of activities and equipment to conduct research, such as salaries, stipends, or computers.

Funding Available

Up to $500 per award, per person, per semester. Only one (1) trainee per lab/supervisor/research group will be funded.

Award Criteria

Demonstration that the activity will contribute toward a trainee’s development as a data scientist (e.g. foster collaborations, acquire new knowledge, new skills, new experience, etc.).

Acknowledgments or Reporting

If a trainee’s request is approved for funding and they are presenting a poster or giving an oral presentation, they must acknowledge CANSSI Ontario support.

In addition, a post-event summary is required to be eligible for funding again in the future. Post-event reports should be submitted to the CANSSI Ontario Program Manager four weeks after the event, as follows:

  3. Whether you would recommend future instances of the event to others and why.
  4. Additional supplementary information (if available, photos from the event–high-resolution preferred)
