Meaningful Learning Through Equitable Assessment in Statistics Education

Abstract

The landscape of statistics education assessment has transformed dramatically in recent years, influenced by both the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid adoption of Large Language Models. This talk explores how principles of equitable assessment can create more meaningful learning experiences in statistics courses. Drawing from recent classroom experiences, I’ll share strategies that promote iteration, reflection, and authentic engagement with statistical concepts—including structured feedback/revision cycles and activities that model professional statistical workflows. I’ll also address practical challenges such as balancing flexibility with accountability and managing logistical constraints. By designing assessments with these principles in mind, we can create learning environments where students feel empowered to take risks, persist through challenges, and ultimately surprise us with their insights.

Speaker Profile

Nathalie Moon has been teaching in the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Toronto since 2018.  Her research and teaching focus centers on transforming statistical education through innovative pedagogical approaches, particularly in large-enrollment courses. Dr Moon is actively involved in developing automated assessment technologies to provide timely, constructive feedback on programming assignments. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes creating opportunities for students to engage in meaningful reflection and revision processes, fostering deeper learning and skill development. She is also committed to establishing partnerships with community organizations to provide students with authentic learning experiences that reflect real-world statistical practice. These partnerships enable students to work with actual datasets and stakeholders, bridging the gap between classroom theory and professional application. Nathalie is equally committed to faculty development and teaching excellence within her department. She co-facilitates departmental instructor roundtables, mentors new faculty members, and has revitalized a series of TA training meetings in her courses to foster a student-centered and supportive teaching community.
