TORONTO, ON – August 25, 2021: The Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute, Ontario (CANSSI Ontario) is delighted to announce Professor Rohan Alexander as Assistant Director of CANSSI Ontario. Professor Alexander is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, jointly appointed to the Department of Statistical Sciences and the Faculty of Information.

Commenting on this new role, Professor Alexander said, “I was very fortunate to experience the benefit of CANSSI Ontario first-hand, through its support of two of my students. I could not be more excited to take on this position at CANSSI to support and fuel the outstanding work of other researchers in the statistical sciences.”

Professor Alexander came to the University of Toronto from Australia, as a post-doctoral fellow in the Faculty of Information. Before coming to UofT, he completed a Bachelor of Economics from University of Queensland. He did his graduate studies at Australian National University receiving a Master of Economics and PhD (Economics). His research involves the use of statistical models and the pathways of the data in these models and the reproducibility of the process with different applications including Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Multilevel Regression with Post-stratification (MRP).

Recently, Professor Alexander’s book on foundational data skills, tentatively titled Telling Stories With Data, was accepted for publication by CRC Press (May 2021). He is also co-editor of a book about MRP tentatively titled Multilevel Regression and Poststratification: A Practical Guide and New Developments, which was accepted for publication by Cambridge University Press (July 2021). He also co-founded the The Toronto Data Workshop (TDW), which brings together academia and industry to consider, collate, share, and disseminate best practices in doing data science.

Bringing a fresh and innovative perspective to the role of Assistant Director, Professor Alexander will work alongside CANSSI Ontario Director Dr. Lisa Strug to help CANSSI Ontario meet its ambitious goals.
