CANSSI Ontario Postdoctoral Fellowship in Statistical Sciences – Award Recipient: Mai Ghannam

CANSSI Ontario is pleased to announce Dr. Mai Ghannam as the recipient of the 2023 CANSSI Ontario Postdoctoral Fellowship in Statistical Sciences.

Mai will be working with Professors Rafal Kulik (University of Ottawa) and Stanislav Volgushev (University of Toronto). Mai will be based in Ottawa during the first year of her Fellowship and in Toronto during her second. She completed her undergraduate degree in Mathematics at the University of Windsor, where she discovered her passion for mathematical statistics.

Dr. Ghannam’s PhD dissertation titled “On estimation methods in tensor regression models” focused on establishing asymptotic results for two tensor regression models under some weak dependence assumptions. The asymptotic results were key to establish some sufficient conditions for the dominance of the proposed shrinkage estimators over the unrestricted estimator. Applications of the PhD work include some improved estimation in neuro-imaging and network data as well as change-point detection of fMRI brain images.

Dr. Ghannam has published several related papers and presented in many contributed and invited talks. Her research interests include statistical inference, tensor regression models and their applications, change-points, region selection, shrinkage estimation and theory on weakly dependent data.

About

The CANSSI Ontario Postdoctoral Fellowship in Statistical Sciences, cofounded by CANSSI and CANSSI Ontario, provides salary support for up to two years for postdoctoral fellows undertaking full-time research at a CANSSI Ontario partner university or at their affiliated research institutes. The fellowship supports research projects that deepen understanding of theoretical statistical sciences, but projects in other areas of statistics may also be considered.

This fellowship requires that candidates apply to and meet the requirements of the CANSSI Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship program which is open to faculty appointed at CANSSI Ontario partner universities or at their affiliated research institutes.

CANSSI Ontario is the Ontario Regional Centre of the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI). Its goal is to strengthen and enhance research and training in data science in the province by developing programs that promote interdisciplinary research and enable multidisciplinary collaboration.

The Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI) is Canada’s catalyst for discovery and innovation in statistical sciences and for advances in collaborative research and training. CANSSI programs support the pursuit of cutting-edge collaborative research involving statistical sciences along with the communication and application of the results to science, engineering, and society.

CANSSI is supported under the Discovery Institutes Support program of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
