Xianghong Fang is a first-year PhD student in the Department of Statistical Sciences (DoSS), working under the joint supervision of University of Toronto Professors Qiang Sun (DoSS) and Yu Zhou (Department of Materials Science & Engineering).
Together, they will work on the Mdoc project “Automatic material discovery for implants using statistical Learning methods.” They are dedicated to enhancing implant performance and biocompatibility through innovative approaches in material science.
Xianghong’s research interests are leveraging statistical and mathematical knowledge to address optimization problems in the field of machine learning.
Xianghong has presented two research papers at distinguished AI conferences: one accepted at the 60th annual meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) in 2022 and another at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in 2024. He has also submitted a new research report to ICLR 2025 which is currently under review.
CANSSI Ontario launched the Multidisciplinary Doctoral (Mdoc) Training Program in the DoSS in 2019. Students admitted to the Mdoc Program can be domestic or international and will receive the same funding package as the other doctoral students entering the DoSS including Teaching Assistant assignments.
